On the Curse of Death and the Hope of Resurrection

TEXT

¹²The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
His sin is stored up.
¹³The pains of childbirth come upon him;
He is not a wise son,
For it is not the time that he should delay at the opening of the womb.
¹⁴Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
O Death, where are your thorns?
O Sheol, where is your sting?
Compassion will be hidden from My sight.

¹⁵Though he flourishes among the reeds,
An east wind will come,
The wind of the Lord coming up from the wilderness;
And his fountain will become dry
And his spring will be dried up;
It will plunder his treasury of every precious article.
¹⁶Samaria will be held guilty,
For she has rebelled against her God.
They will fall by the sword,
Their little ones will be dashed in pieces,
And their pregnant women will be ripped open.

On a Christmas Joy That Lasts

TEXT

9 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

²The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.
³You have enlarged the nation
    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
    as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.
⁴For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
    you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor.
⁵Every warrior’s boot used in battle
    and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
    will be fuel for the fire.
⁶For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given,
    and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
⁷Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
    from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

On True and False Repentance

TEXT

6 Come, let’s return to the Lord.
For he has torn us,
and he will heal us;
he has wounded us,
and he will bind up our wounds.
²He will revive us after two days,
and on the third day he will raise us up
so we can live in his presence.
³Let’s strive to know the Lord.
His appearance is as sure as the dawn.
He will come to us like the rain,
like the spring showers that water the land.

⁴What am I going to do with you, Ephraim?
What am I going to do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist
and like the early dew that vanishes.
⁵This is why I have used the prophets
to cut them down;
I have killed them with the words from my mouth.
My judgment strikes like lightning.
⁶For I desire faithful love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

⁷But they, like Adam, have violated the covenant;
there they have betrayed me.

⁸Gilead is a city of evildoers,
tracked with bloody footprints.
⁹Like raiders who wait in ambush for someone,
a band of priests murders on the road to Shechem.
They commit atrocities.
¹⁰I have seen something horrible in the house of Israel:
Ephraim’s promiscuity is there; Israel is defiled.

¹¹A harvest is also appointed for you, Judah.

On the Love and the Wrath of God

TEXT

11 When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.
²Israel called to the Egyptians
even as Israel was leaving them.
They kept sacrificing to the Baals
and burning offerings to idols.
³It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
taking them by the hand,
but they never knew that I healed them.
⁴I led them with human cords,
with ropes of love.
To them I was like one
who eases the yoke from their jaws;
I bent down to give them food.
⁵Israel will not return to the land of Egypt
and Assyria will be his king,
because they refused to repent.
⁶A sword will whirl through his cities;
it will destroy and devour the bars of his gates,
because of their schemes.
⁷My people are bent on turning from me.
Though they call to him on high,
he will not exalt them at all.

⁸How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?
I have had a change of heart;
my compassion is stirred!
⁹I will not vent the full fury of my anger;
I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim.
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One among you;
I will not come in rage.
¹⁰They will follow the Lord;
he will roar like a lion.
When he roars,
his children will come trembling from the west.
¹¹They will be roused like birds from Egypt
and like doves from the land of Assyria.
Then I will settle them in their homes.

This is the Lord’s declaration.
