About

Welcome to Faith Seeking Understanding.

My name is Phillip Powers, and this blog exists to explore Scripture, theology, church history, and the Christian life from an evangelical perspective. Here you will find biblical studies, theological reflections, book reviews, devotional writings, and occasional interactions with contemporary issues facing the church. My goal is simple: to think carefully about God’s Word and to encourage others to do the same.

I was born and raised in northeast Arkansas in a Christian family. I trusted in Christ at the age of eight and have been following him ever since. During my teenage years, I became actively involved in the life of my local church, and at the age of fifteen I sensed God’s calling to vocational ministry.

In 2006, I graduated from Ouachita Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a minor in Biblical Studies. I then moved to southern California to attend Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, where I earned a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Ministries in 2010. After several years working in the corporate world, God opened the door for me to return to academic study and ministry.

I am currently a PhD candidate (ABD) in Biblical Studies (New Testament) at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. My research focuses on the eschatology of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, particularly the way Luke presents Jesus’s message through the theological lenses of Isaiah and Daniel. More broadly, my interests include the historical Jesus, the Synoptic Gospels, Luke-Acts, the Gospel of John, biblical theology, restoration eschatology, hermeneutics, and the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament.

In addition to my academic work, I serve as an Affiliate Faculty Mentor with Kairos University and regularly preach in churches throughout northeast Arkansas. Whether in the classroom, the pulpit, or through writing, my desire is to help others grow in their understanding of Scripture and their love for Christ.

My wife, Winny, and I were married in 2017. She is a physician assistant and an invaluable partner in ministry and life. Together we have two daughters, Mikayla and Elianna, who continually remind us of God’s grace and faithfulness. As a family, we enjoy spending time together, and when I am not studying or writing, you can often find me watching hockey—an interest I inherited from my wife and have enthusiastically embraced.

Thank you for visiting the blog. I hope the articles and resources found here will encourage you to think deeply, love God faithfully, and follow Christ wholeheartedly.
